MR. UNDERHILL’S AT DINHAM WIER, Ludlow http://www.mr-underhills.co.uk

Our absolute favourite. The best meal we’ve ever had in Britain! There is no menu choice but they do speak to you beforehand to make sure you like what they’re preparing and will cater for your likes and dislikes. Completely gorgeous. Michelin starred.  (15 minutes)

LA BECASSE, Ludlow www.labecasse.co.uk/

An elegant restaurant with beautiful food. Achieved a Michelin star only 18 months after opening.  We loved it and our guests keep coming back full of praise. The Good Food Guide says it serves food that will knock your socks off. (15 minutes)

THE GLASSHOUSE, Worcester  www.theglasshouse.co.uk

This started life as Shaun Hill's new venture in Worcester, after he moved from the Merchant House in Ludlow - the one that started Ludlow off as a gourmet town. He has since moved to Abergavenny, but the food remains excellent,  in a modern Bistro atmosphere. (45 minutes)

THE ROSE and CROWN, Tenbury Wells  Tel: 01584 810335

Not sure if this is close enough to be officially our local  – but we’d like it to be! Restaurant recently expanded to a pub just outside Tenbury from a location in town. Imaginative menus, reasonable prices (10 minutes)

THE PEMBROKE HOUSE, Tenbury Wells 01584 810 301

A great local pub, black and white, wobbly walls, lots of locals in the bar and a sweet little dining room called The Piggery! Excellent food and a fun place.  (5 minutes)

THE BELL at YARPOLE, http://www.thebellinnyarpole.co.uk/ Tel: 01568 780359

Another one run by one of the Ludlow restaurant families. Finally found an excuse to go there. Glad we did. Good food, excellent service.  (15 minutes)

THE STAGG INN, Titley www.thestagg.co.uk

Award-winning, attractive, roomy dining pub with delicious food. Michelin starred  (30 minutes)

THE WATERDINE, Llanfair Waterdine

Haven't been yet, but have heard good things.  (30 minutes)

THE CLIVE & THE COOKHOUSE, Bromfield www.theclive.co.uk

OVERTON GRANGE HOTEL, Nr Ludlow www.overtongrangehotel.com

High end food. Nice comfy sofas etc for drinks before and coffee after.  Haven't been there for a bit (10 minutes)

PENRHOS COURT, Kington www.greencuisine.org

The most beautiful building in Herefordshire!  A stunning place and deeply green and organic.  Unusual and delicious delicious food served in the ancient Cruck Hall.  Eat well and feel worthy!!  (35 minutes)

THE SHIP HOTEL, Tenbury Wells. www.theshiptenbury.co.uk 01584 810269

Good honest food at a reasonable price in a restaurant with white table cloths. (10 minutes)

THE BOOT, Orleton, Ludlow. www.thebootinnorleton.co.uk  01568 780228

We send quite a lot of people here, and they've all liked it. We haven't been yet, but it's next on our list (15mins)

A bit further away

RIVERSIDE AT AYMESTREY, http://www.theriversideinn.org/

Good food, popular, nice location (40 mins)

THE BELL AT SKENFRITH, www.skenfrith.co.uk/

Very good food, stylish accommodation, beautiful countryside. Convenient for Hay on Wye and the Brecon Beacons (70 mins)

WALNUT TREE NEAR ABERGAVENNY, http://www.thewalnuttreeinn.com/

Shaun Hill's (ex the Merchant House in Ludlow) current venture. Very interesting menus with rather unusual food (e.g. pig’s head cromesqui with caperberries and crisp lemon zest). Definitely one for the foodies. (80 mins)

1861 AT CROSS ASH NR ABERGAVENNY, http://www.18-61.co.uk/

Just up the road from The Walnut Tree if you have any room left. Very good food and very friendly.  (78 mins)

GENTLE JANE AT GROSMONT, www.gentlejane.co.uk.

Tea Rooms and B&B. We stayed there recently for a short break and thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent base for exploring southwest Wales and Monmouthshire (60 mins).
